ABOUT THE PRINCIPALITY OF WALES
Jon Bennett lives and works in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales. The influence of the Pembrokeshire landscape, prehistoric monuments and constantly changing weather patterns permeates his paintings and illustrations. A number of links that provide information on the Principality follows the brief description.
Wales lies to the west of mainland Britain, to the east of the Celtic Sea. The Principality is a land of mountains, high moorland and deep river valleys, fringed by spectacular coastlines and offshore islands. The landscape is littered with historic sites - stone age burial chambers and standing stones, iron age settlements, Norman castles and Episcopal Palaces. History and legend are inextricably intertwined. Wales is at the centre of the Arthurian Matter of Britain. The Mabinogion is one the earliest works of Western European literature, the repository of a mythos that pre-dates the Roman conquest of the British Isles. Wales was the crucible that produced the monastic and missionary traditions of the Celtic Church, and its hills and valleys are imprinted with the memory of Celtic Saints and pilgrims' ways.
The County of Pembrokeshire is at the extreme south west of the Principality: in the Welsh language Pembroke is Penfro - The Land's Ending. Carn Meini, high in the Preseli Hills, was the source of the spotted dolerite 'bluestones' that formed the first stone circle at Stonehenge. Manobier, on the south coast, was the birthplace of Gerald of Wales, author of the 12th century Journey Through Wales and Description of Wales. Pembroke Castle was the springboard for the Norman-Welsh invasion of Ireland and the birthplace of Harri Tudor - Henry VII of England - who landed nearby on his return from exile and began the march that led to Bosworth Field, where the death of Richard III and the fall of the House of York left the way clear for a Tudor monarchy.
West Wales has been the inspiration for many artists and writers, including Joseph Turner, Augustus John, Graham Sutherland, Dylan Thomas, R.S. Thomas and Gillian Clarke. There remains a growing community of artists working in West Wales. Pembrokeshire is at the southern gateway of the Irish Sea Zone, from prehistoric times onward a region of rich cultural interchange. Recent years have seen an accelerated renewal of Welsh-Irish cultural links and events.
